Haitians from the Artibonite (department in Haiti) consume a lot of Lalo. It is in the Artibonite Valley that you find the greatest production of this crop. It is used in the famous Lalo greens stew and is eaten over a bed of rice also known as “Diri ak Lalo”. Lalo or Jute leaves are grown in many parts of the world it is called saluyot and ewedu. Scientifically known as Corchorus Olitorius, the jute leaves are are used for cooking in many cultures. The leaves have slightly toothed edges. When harvested young, jute leaves are generally flavourful and tender. The leaves are very tasty and tender when cooked through.
